The Pousada is tucked away in the heart of the northern Alentejo close to the historic town of Crato. About 1350 this town was the home of the Knights Templar Order of Malta and some 5 kilometres to the north in 1356 they constructed a magnificent Monastery for their Order. Happily for history this decision saved for posterity the building as the Crato town walls and its castle were virtually destroyed by the invading Spanish army in the 17th century. The Pousada is an imposing structure more for its appearance than for its size. As a guest it would be difficult to remain unaffected by its splendid atmosphere as the original structure has been retained whilst the guests are mainly accommodated in an extension. There are 24 rooms a restaurant and bar, and a TV room. For the convenience of guests there is a swimming pool. It is highly recommended when staying to visit the nearby Coudelaria de Alter which was founded in 1748 as a Royal Stud farm for the breeding of Lusitanian horses. Unfortunately, from personal experience we found that this Pousada has been neglected, being in need of attention and refurbishing, and the food and service not to the professional level expected.
The Pousada is approximately 207 kms from Lisbon Airport.
